Overview

Mumbai Indians Team is one of the best known cricket teams of Indian Premier League (IPL). The team is based in Mumbai, Maharashtra and has been a part of the IPL since its very first season in 2008. Over the years, MI has earned a reputation as a team that appears when it matters most, especially in knockout rounds.

The Mumbai Indians IPL team has won five IPL titles – in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. That makes them joint record holders for the most titles in IPL history. Their fan base is known as the MI Paltan and is spread through the country and even internationally. The team plays its home matches at the Wankhede Stadium at Mumbai which is one of the most iconic cricket venues in India.

Owned by Reliance Industries through its subsidiary Indiawin Sports Pvt. Ltd, MI has always had the wherewithal to assemble good squads. The franchise has expanded from the IPL itself and now there are different leagues where the teams play under the “MI” brand, such as SA20, ILT20, and MLC.

Going into IPL 2026, MI goes in as one of the title favourites. The Mumbai Indians 2026 squad is crafted around some experienced individuals and a few new faces through trades and mini-auction in December 2025.

Team History

Mumbai Indians was formed in 2008 as one of the eight original franchises of the IPL. The team was bought by Reliance Industries and this gave MI a very solid financial base right from the start. In the beginning years, the team was led by Sachin Tendulkar, and later, Rohit Sharma assumed the leadership role.

The first IPL title was won in 2013, when MI defeated Chennai Super Kings in the final. That win was significant as it established MI as a true championship side after a couple of near-misses. Two years later in 2015, they defeated CSK one again in the final by 41 runs. Then came 2017, when they lost to Rising Pune Supergiant in one of the closest finals in the history of IPL by just a run.

In 2019, MI again met CSK in the final and defeated them by one run. And in 2020, playing in the UAE due to the restrictions of the Covid pandemic, they beat Delhi Capitals by 5 wickets to win a record fifth title.

Under the first coaching period of Mahela Jayawardene from 2017 to 2022 MI won three titles. He was brought back as head coach in 2025 after the team finished last in IPL 2024 under Mark Boucher.

The 2024 season was a rough year. The team had come last with only four wins in 14 matches. Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya had replaced Rohit Sharma in the leadership position that season and he received a lot of criticism from the fans. But MI supported him and kept him on for the next seasons.

Team Performance

Mumbai Indians have had a roller coaster journey in the IPL seasons but overall their record remains one of the best in the tournament. They have consistently made it to the playoffs in most seasons and are one of two teams with five title wins.

If you look at Mumbai Indians records, 2024 was their worst season in recent times. They ended up 10th on the points table, only winning 4 of their 14 games.

2025 was a strong bounce-back year. With the return of head coach Mahela Jayawardene, MI finished fourth in the league stage. Suryakumar Yadav had an outstanding season scoring 717 runs and securing the Player of the Tournament award. Trent Boult picked 22 wickets, the highest for MI in that season. The team defeated Gujarat Titans in the Eliminator but lost to the Punjab Kings in Qualifier 2.

Going into 2026, MI kept their core group. Former Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma is likely to operate as an impact player, Suryakumar Yadav in the middle order and Jasprit Bumrah leading the pace attack. The Mumbai Indians schedule for IPL 2026 started on March 29th against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium.

Records & Achievements

The Mumbai Indians records in the IPL are hard to match. Below is a look at some of the biggest highlights:

IPL Titles: 5 (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2020) – joint most in IPL history

Finals Appearances: 7 (2010, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2020, 2023*)

Notable Records:

  • For Mumbai Indians, Rohit Sharma is the leading run-scorer in the history of IPL, and he has scored more than 7,046 runs in 272 IPL games with 2 centuries and 47 half-centuries. He also holds the record for the highest number of sixes in the history of IPL with 302.
  • Jasprit Bumrah is their highest wicket-taker of all time. By the beginning of 2026 he became the first Indian pacer to claim 180 wickets for a single franchise. He now has 183 wickets in IPL overall.
  • In 2025, Suryakumar Yadav broke the record for the highest number of runs scored in a single IPL season by the non-opener, with 717 runs.
  • Mumbai Indians were the first IPL franchise to exceed the $100 million brand value mark back in 2017.
  • MI were the first team in the history of T20 cricket to win 100 T20 matches, which they accomplished in the 2017 season.

When you look at Mumbai Indians stats in all the seasons of the IPL, they have played more than 250 matches, won more than 140 of them and have one of the best win percentages along with all other franchises.

Home Ground Details

Stadium: Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai

The Wankhede Stadium has been the home of MI since 2008. It is located near Marine Drive in South Mumbai and is owned by Mumbai Cricket Association. The stadium has a capacity of approximately 33,108.

Pitch Type: Wankhede is usually a batting friendly pitch. The red soil surface provides the true bounce that makes it easier for batters to play their shots. Fast bowlers do get a little help in the beginning, particularly with the new ball because of the sea breeze. As the game progresses, the pitch tends to flow out. Dew in evening matches may make bowling more difficult in the second innings.

MI’s Record at Wankhede: Mumbai Indians have an enviable record at their home ground. They have won 55 matches at this ground throughout the history of the IPL, which is the highest win record of any team at their home ground in the IPL.

Historic Moments at Wankhede: The stadium hosted the 2011 ICC World Cup Final match which saw India winning over Sri Lanka. It is also the venue for Sachin Tendulkar’s farewell Test match in 2013, and has a lot of emotional weight for Indian cricket fans.

Latest News

The latest Mumbai Indians News going into IPL 2026 has been largely positive. A squad has been finalised of 25 players. They retained Hardik Pandya as captain, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Trent Boult, Ryan Rickelton, Mitchell Santner, Naman Dhir and Will Jacks among others.

Through trades before the mini-auction, MI brought in Shardul Thakur from Lucknow Super Giants, Sherfane Rutherford from Gujarat Titans and Mayank Markande from Kolkata Knight Riders. At the mini-auction in December 2025, they signed Quinton de Kock, Danish Malewar, Mohammad Izhar, Atharva Ankolekar and Mayank Rawat.

Quinton de Kock’s return is regarded as an important addition. He was a member in the 2019 and 2020 title winning squads and scored 1,329 runs in 43 matches for MI at an average of 34.08.

Jasprit Bumrah was also an integral part of the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup winning squad of India where he concluded the tournament as joint-highest wicket-taker which shows he arrives at IPL 2026 in a great way.

The Mumbai Indians coach Mahela Jayawardene has helped the team recover from the poor 2024 campaign and the signs from 2025 were positive. The team appears to be well-balanced across departments and will be looking to end their title drought, not having won the IPL since 2020.

The Mumbai Indians Fixtures for IPL 2026 begin at home, which gives them the edge of playing at the Wankhede early in the season.
