Overview

Punjab Kings is one of the original ten teams in the Indian Premier League, having competed in every season since the league began in 2008. They were originally known as Kings XI Punjab, but were renamed Punjab Kings in February 2021. Punjab Kings IPL team is based in New Chandigarh and play their home games at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur.

PBKS, as the team is also known, have struggled in the IPL without a ring. But in 2025 they finally made the final for the first time in over a decade, ending up as runner up after being defeated by Royal Challengers Bengaluru. It was their most successful season in recent years. Owned by Mohit Burman, Ness Wadia, Bollywood actress Preity Zinta, and Karan Paul, the team has a good deal of star power.

While the Punjab Kings team has never won an IPL trophy, it has always been a good side with quality players and a strong batting lineup. In 2014 and 2025, they topped the points table and reached the final, but lost both of them. Under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer and the coaching of Ricky Ponting, they are looking to win their maiden trophy in IPL 2026.

Team History

The Punjab Kings franchise was bought for Rs 304 crore in 2008. Their first season was promising. They made it to the semi-finals where they lost to Chennai Super Kings. Their most memorable season was the 2014 season in which they showed real character under a new management and captain George Bailey. The best player of the tournament was Glenn Maxwell who was the most valuable player with 552 runs. In the final, Wriddhiman Saha made a century. But this was not enough. KKR chased down 200 with three balls to spare and Punjab finished as runner up.

After 2014, PBKS went through a long period of finishing in the lower half of the table, usually sixth or seventh. They had star players in several seasons but failed in the captain and a consistent team make up. KL Rahul had been excellent with the franchise, having received a 2020 season Orange Cap due to 670 runs. Nevertheless, the team failed to qualify in the playoffs.

The rebranding to Punjab Kings in 2021 did not bring an immediate turnaround. The team continued to experiment with captains and auctions between 2021 and 2024. In 2025, the combination of Shreyas Iyer as captain and Ricky Ponting as head coach finally clicked. The group led the points table by winning nine matches during the league phase and made it to the final where they lost to RCB by a narrow margin of six runs in Ahmedabad. It was also a bitter loss, but it signified that the franchise had finally discovered a winning formula.

Team Performance

When you look at Punjab Kings Stats, you can see many individual brilliance but they failed to perform as a team. They have topped the points table twice, in 2014 and 2025, yet converted neither into a title.

The highest win percentage in one season was achieved in 2014 when they won 11 out of 14 group stage matches. They won nine league stage matches and made it to the final in 2025. However, in a few seasons between 2015 and 2024, they placed sixth, seventh or eighth. A major cause to that inconsistency was the absence of an established captain over several years. Within ten seasons they changed captains nearly every season.

Punjab Kings 2026 Squad

The Punjab Kings 2026 squad is largely the same group that reached the IPL 2025 final. PBKS retained 21 players going into the mini auction in December 2025 and had just four slots to fill with a remaining purse of Rs 11.5 crore, the second lowest among all franchises. Their new signings were Cooper Connolly, Ben Dwarshuis, Pravin Dubey, and Vishal Nishad.

Records & Achievements

Punjab Kings Records in the IPL are mostly about individual performances rather than team success. They have never won the IPL, making them the most high profile side to not win after 18 seasons.

They have played two finals in 2014 and 2025. They have finished at the top of the points table in both of these seasons, proving that they can take the pressure of a full season but have fallen short at the finish line.

Notable individual performances from the team include KL Rahul’s 132 not out against RCB in 2020, which is the highest score by an Indian batter in IPL at that time. David Miller’s 38 ball century in 2013 against RCB remains one of the most talked about knocks in the history of the competition. On the bowling front, Arshdeep Singh has emerged as one of the most consistent bowlers in the death overs and is now a regular wicket taker for the team.

Home Ground Details

The Mullanpur stadium is the current home ground of the Punjab Kings, also known as the New PCA Stadium or the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium. It was built in 2021, and has a capacity of approximately 38,000. It also hosts some of the team’s home matches at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala, usually in the second half of the season.

The pitch at Mullanpur is a balanced surface. It is a good pitch for both fast bowlers and batsmen. The boundary is not too short, at around 65 to 68 meters. This is a good place for teams to score over 170, and it is not a good place to chase less than that. There is rarely dew, thanks to the climate, which makes for relatively even conditions for both teams.
