Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium History
Hyderabad gained a new cricketing facility when the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium opened in 2004 to replace the Lal Bahadur Shastri Cricket Stadium, which had been the main cricketing venue in Hyderabad prior to 2004. Since 2004, the RGICS has had numerous renovation projects to enhance and modernise the amenities, increase its seating capacity, and improve the quality of its pitch. Many important matches have taken place at the RGICS, including finals of the IPL and international matches. The RGICS is closely associated with the Sunrisers Hyderabad, and many of their greatest sports have occurred there. Because of the consistent playing conditions provided by the RGICS and modern amenities, it is a preferred venue for major tournaments.
Pitch Report
According to the pitching report of Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Ground, it is primarily a batting-friendly pitch (especially in limited-overs formats). The pitch is usually very flat, giving bagemans the chance to hit aggressive shots as soon as they settle. Therefore, it’s not uncommon for high-score games to be played here (especially in T20 and IPL games).
The average score of T20 encounters has been between 160 and 180, while ODIs regularly exceed 280 runs.
However, the pitch is not only for batting. New ball bowlers are able to achieve some early movement with the new ball (particularly during day/night matches when weather conditions will assist swing). The pitch will tend to slow down as the match progresses, and this is where the spinners come into play. Despite not achieving large amounts of turn, spinners will get enough grip to reduce the rate of scoring and set up wicket-taking opportunities in the middle overs.
The toss statistics suggest that teams are generally inclined to chase, as it is much easier for the batting side in the second half of the game due to dew forming at night. Dew makes it difficult for bowlers to grip the ball, creating a significant advantage for the batting side in the second half of the game.
There have been a large number of high-scoring matches played at this venue in recent IPL matches, and therefore it is viewed as an excellent place to play.
Boundary Length
The boundary length at this stadium is moderate, providing a fair contest between bat and ball.
| Side | Length |
| Straight Boundary | 70-75 meters |
| Square Boundary | 65-70 meters |
| Longest Boundary | ~75 meters |
| Shortest Boundary | ~63 meters |
The shorter square boundaries encourage aggressive batting, especially in T20 matches. Players often target these areas to maximize scoring opportunities. Meanwhile, the slightly longer straight boundaries help bowlers maintain some control.

Toss Record (IPL)
In limited-overs cricket, the toss has a major influence at this stadium, 55-60% of the matches played at this stadium have been won by chasing teams due to dew affecting the second innings bowlers, as such captains who win the toss prefer to bowl first.
In day game conditions and/or on pitches that are slightly slower than usual, there is also an opportunity to bat first. Teams that have batted first and posted scores in excess of average generally have a good chance of defending those totals.

Weather Report
The weather in Hyderabad can affect cricket games at the stadium because its climate is very hot and dry so that it can negatively impact the quality of play. Match day temperatures for the majority of cricket games usually range from 25°C to 38°C, and day matches typically have higher temperatures than evening matches; however, evening matches tend to have a higher level of comfort for fans and players alike. There can be moderate levels of humidity during the day, but there may be slightly more humidity at night.
Rain delays are infrequent; however, rain can occur during the monsoon months (July to September); as a result, most of the cricket matches played in Hyderabad during the international or IPL season will not take place during that time period.
The best time for matches to take place in Hyderabad is between October and March, when the weather is mild and ideal for cricket. During night matches moisture on the ground can make a significant impact on gameplay in the second half of the game, particularly when dew forms.
