India has the highest partnership record in ODIs with Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid sharing the record. In November 1999 they contributed 331 runs in the 2nd wicket against New Zealand at Hyderabad. Tendulkar was 186 not out. Dravid’s total was 153 runs. India’s total score was 376 runs in only two wickets, winning the match by 174 runs. This is the largest One Day International record in the entire world and remained so until Gayle and Marlon Samuels scored 372 runs for West Indies in the 2015 World Cup.

Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid scored 318 runs the 2nd wicket against Sri Lanka at Taunton in the 1999 world cup. Ganguly made 183. Dravid scored 145. There are two 300+ run partnerships in India, both in 1999, both of which involve Dravid.

Highest Partnerships for India in ODIs

He is the sole batter in the history of ODI who has been involved in two 300-run partnerships.

In 1998, Mohammad Azharuddin and Ajay Jadeja scored 275 not out in 4th wicket with Zimbabwe, the highest ever 4th wicket partnership of any team in the history of ODI. Virat Kohli has the record for the most 200-run partnerships with Indian teammates because he has participated in 14 such partnerships. The partnership between Tendulkar and Ganguly produced 8227 ODI runs through their 176 innings which represents the highest total for any Indian batting pair.

The 1998 ODI match between Zimbabwe and India saw Mohammad Azharuddin and Ajay Jadeja establish a 275-run partnership which became the record for fourth-wicket partnerships. Virat Kohli has established 14 partnerships which reached 200 runs or more for India, making him the Indian player with the highest number of such partnerships. The ODI partnership between Tendulkar and Ganguly reached 8227 runs through 176 innings, which stands as the highest total between any Indian batting pair.

4 Things This Table Does Not Tell You

The only batter in the history of ODIs to have participated in two 300 run partnerships is Rahul Dravid. Both came in 1999. Both involved different partners. Both were in different competitions.

In November, a bilateral series was lost to New Zealand by 331 at Hyderabad. He made 153, Tendulkar made 186 not out. The 318 against Sri Lanka at Taunton came during the world cup in May. He made 145, Ganguly made 183. Six months later the same batter, two distinct partners, two different stands of more than 300 runs each, a feat never accomplished before in the history of ODI by any pair. Dravid entered both such innings as a second-wicket player with a more aggressive partner. In both instances he scored above 150. The table indicates the runs. It does not indicate that the same man was at the centre of the two records during the same calendar year.

The Ganguly-Dravid 318 at Taunton was not meant to occur. In the first over India had lost their first wicket. They were already down to 0 against Sri Lanka in a World Cup game they had to win.

What ensued was Ganguly registering 183 out of a total 158 balls – his best ODI score ever. And Dravid with 145 out of 129. The two men had their respective career-best ODI performances during the same innings, during the same partnership, in a World Cup. India posted 373 for 6. Sri Lanka bowled out at 216. The margin was 157 runs. It is the largest partnership in the history of the ODI world cup in India and the second greatest world cup partnership of all time. More attention is paid to the Tendulkar-Dravid 331 as it was the world record. However, the Ganguly-Dravid 318 was put together in a knockout atmosphere, against a full-strength Sri Lankan team, when India already lost a wicket in the first over. The level of the difficulty was increased.

Azharuddin-Jadeja unbeaten 275 against Zimbabwe in 1998 was the best 4th wicket partnership in the history of ODI for any side. India had lost 3 wickets for just 25 runs before their opening partnership.

Two wickets had been taken down at 25 runs. Tendulkar, Ganguly and VVS Laxman were back to the pavilion. It appeared to be all over. Not out scores of Azharuddin and Jadeja were 153 and 116 respectively. India scored 301 against 3 and led by 32 runs. The union saved an innings, but it saved a match that was lost. The record remains to this day, 28 years later. No two-player team in any nation has made a record of 275 not out in the fourth wicket in ODI. The fact that the Indian 4th-wicket record is also the ODI record of that wicket all-time is among the least discussed statistics in Indian cricket history.

Virat Kohli has appeared in 14 partnerships of 200 or more in ODIs- the most by an Indian batter. Five of them were in the company of Rohit Sharma, the most by any duo in the history of ODI.

The Kohli Rohit 210, 202, 204 and 246 at different series and venues. India achieved their most successful ODI chase when they reached 246 runs against West Indies in Guwahati during 2018. The modern era of Indian ODI batting has seen them become its most active run-sharing partnership because they achieved multiple century partnerships throughout the last ten years. The two players have established a partnership record which includes 8227 runs over their ODIs. The total of Kohli and Rohit partnership performances remains incomplete yet it belongs to the same category. The two time periods introduced two new starting player combinations which featured a left-right player combination that opponents found difficult to divide.

Tendulkar and Dravid. November 1999. Hyderabad. 331 Runs. The Partnership That Was a World Record for 16 Years.

New Zealand successfully bowled out India during their initial One Day International match. India needed to respond. The second match in Hyderabad was kicked off when Sourav Ganguly got out in the second over. When India had managed to score 10 runs losing one wicket, Rahul Dravid came to bat.

The action continued until the 48th over. The players failed to establish a partnership between Tendulkar and Dravid. The two players destroyed the opposing bowling team by scoring 331 runs in 280 deliveries. Tendulkar scored 186 not out which included 20 fours and three sixes. This achievement made him the holder of the highest ODI score by an Indian player. His score surpassed Ganguly’s 183, which he achieved five months earlier. Dravid reached 153 runs through 153 deliveries until his dismissal occurred two overs before the match conclusion. He did not need to accelerate. The victory had already been secured.

India succeeded in making 376 runs and still remaining with 2 wickets in hand. All the wickets of New Zealand were down with only 202 runs made in that inning. Finally, the game concluded with a win for India by 174 runs. The partnership of 331 runs by these two batsmen became the record in ODIs before Gayle & Samuels’ 372-run partnership in the 2015 World Cup.

Runs scored by Tendulkar were 186. Runs scored by Dravid were 153. There are many teams who make their complete runs scored in an ODI innings in that one partnership only, where two players score 339 runs together. This is the highest partnership made by any team in international cricket matches.

Can Any Current India Pair Challenge The 331 Partnership Record?

This record of 331 has remained for 26 years and more than 1,000 innings of India in ODIs since 1999. The most recent closest to this record was made by Virat Kohli and Ishan Kishan in January 2022 in Chattogram, against Bangladesh in which they scored 290, third highest in India’s ODI history.

The possible pairings for this age would be Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli in positions 1 and 3 respectively, or even better, if Rohit Sharma comes back into ODIs for another World Cup cycle, the two might form an awesome opening partnership. Gill scored a total of 208 runs in his first ODI century against New Zealand in 2023, proving that the personal limit does exist. The question is whether both the instances happen in the same partnership.

331. Set in 1999. Still standing in 2026. It is the longest-surviving batting record in India ODI history.
