Overview
Chennai Super Kings team requires no introduction. Since the IPL began in 2008, CSK has been one of the best known names in the tournament. They play out of Chennai, Tamil Nadu and their home ground, the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium is an iconic venue in Indian cricket.
The team has won five IPL titles to date in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021 and 2023. That puts them joint-first with Mumbai Indians for the most championships in IPL history. What makes CSK different from most other teams is the consistency with which they make it to the latter stages. They have qualified for the playoffs 12 times and played the IPL final 10 times. No other team even comes close to that record.
CSK has always had a huge fan following. Fans come from all over Tamil Nadu and other parts of the country to watch them play at Chepauk. The yellow jersey is spotted in stadiums all over India whenever CSK is playing. Going into the 2026 season, the Chennai Super Kings IPL team has undergone a major rebuild after finishing last in 2025, and fans are curious to see how the new-look team fares.

Team History
Chennai Super Kings started its journey back in 2008 as one of the original 8 franchises in the IPL. India Cements bought the Chennai franchise for about $91 million (INR 395 Cr.) at the time. From the first day, the team was made around MS Dhoni, who was purchased at $1.5 million (INR 9.5 Cr.) during the first auction, making him the most expensive player to be bought at that time.
Their first season was a season of heartbreak. They played well throughout the tournament but lost the 2008 IPL final against Rajasthan Royals on the very last ball. It was a close finish, but it set the tone for what was to come. CSK returned stronger in 2010 & won their first title against Mumbai Indians in the final with Suresh Raina playing a key innings.
They successfully defended the title in 2011, which made it back-to-back championships. Over the next few seasons, they continued to reach the knockouts but were unable to grab a third title. Between 2015 and 2017 the team was suspended from playing in the IPL for a spot fixing case between the team officials. That was a low point for the franchise and its supporters.
When CSK returned in 2018, they displayed incredible character. Despite being mocked as “Dad’s Army” because of the age of some of the players, they won the title the same year, beating Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final and improving the Chennai Super Kings Stats.Shane Watson’s hundred in the chase was a memorable inning in the history of the IPL. They added two more titles in the years of 2021 and 2023 with Ruturaj Gaikwad playing a big role as an opener in both the campaigns.
Team Performance
Over 16 seasons in the IPL, Chennai Super Kings records have been very strong in the league. They have qualified for the playoffs 12 times, something not done by any other team. Their win percentage over the years has remained above 55% for most of the seasons.
In IPL 2025, things did not go well. The team ended up finishing tenth, which turned out to be their worst-ever season. Key players such as Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin are not part of the squad anymore. Jadeja and Sam Curran were exchanged to Rajasthan Royals for Sanju Samson which is being considered as a great strategic move ahead of IPL 2026.
Going into this year’s IPL, the Chennai Super Kings 2026 squad is a mix between experience and youth. Chennai Super Kings Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad comes back fit as he had missed out on last season because of injuries. Sanju Samson has been confirmed to open with Gaikwad. Young talent such as Ayush Mhatre, who hit 240 runs in seven innings at a strike rate of nearly 189 in his maiden season last year, offers the batting real depth. MS Dhoni is also still a part of the squad and could play a key finishing role.
The Chennai Super Kings Schedule for IPL 2026 starts on 30 March with an away match against Rajasthan Royals at Guwahati. CSK will play 7 home matches at Chepauk and 7 away matches in the venues like Bengaluru, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Delhi and Lucknow.

- Finals Appearances: 10 (most in IPL history)

- Champions League Twenty20 Titles: 2 (2010 and 2014)
In terms of individual records within the franchise, Suresh Raina has the record of scoring most runs for CSK colours, as he has scored 5529 runs in 200 matches. Ravichandran Ashwin holds the record for the most wickets for the side in the IPL history. The highest individual score by a CSK batter is 127 off 56 balls by Murali Vijay against Rajasthan Royals in 2010.
The Chennai Super Kings Stats also include a memorable 2013 season when the team became only the second in the history of the IPL to make seven consecutive wins. The franchise became the first sports company to achieve “unicorn” valuation status in India way back in January 2022.
Home Ground Details
The M. A. Chidambaram Stadium is popularly known as Chepauk, and it is one of the oldest cricket grounds in India. It is owned by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association and it has a seating capacity of around 38,000.
The Chepauk pitch is known for favouring spinners especially in the second half of the IPL season when the pace of the pitch tends to be slower and lower. This has suited the playing style of CSK in the past, which has frequently featured quality spin options. The crowd at Chepauk is known to be loud, passionate and totally yellow whenever CSK is at home. The home record of this team at this ground is among the best of any franchise in the IPL.
