Overview
Royal Challengers Bangalore Team is one of the original eight franchises who started the Indian Premier League back in 2008. Now officially named Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the team is based in Bengaluru, Karnataka and plays its home matches at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.
RCB has one of the biggest fan-bases in the IPL. Despite playing a lot of games without a title, the team continued to be one of the most-followed sides in the league. That long wait finally came to an end on June 3, 2025, when RCB beat Punjab Kings by six runs in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. It was their first IPL title in 18 seasons and their fans ensured that the entire country knew about it.
The Royal Challengers Bangalore IPL team has always been made around big names. Over the years, the likes of Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers and Chris Gayle made this team entertaining to watch. Kohli in particular has been with the club from the very start, making him the only player in the history of IPL to have played for only one franchise in all the seasons.
Now going into IPL 2026 as the defending champions, the Royal Challengers Bangalore 2026 squad is looking good at the batting and bowling end. Rajat Patidar is next as captain.

Team History
RCB was established in 2008 when the Bangalore-based team was bought by Vijay Mallya’s United Breweries Group at the IPL’s first-ever team auction. In their first season, the team went 7th out of 8, only winning four of fourteen contests. Rahul Dravid led that side and while there was experience in the team, there was not the right balance for the T20 format.
Things started to look up in 2009. Anil Kumble was appointed Royal Challengers Bangalore captain for the middle of the season and the team was completely turned around. They made it to the final in that year, but lost to the Deccan Chargers. That was the start of a pattern which RCB fans were to know well over the next 15 years, making it to big stages but not quite making it over the final hurdle.
The 2011 season was another near miss. RCB ended up finishing at the top in the group stage and entered the final as one of the favorites but lost to Chennai Super Kings. Chris Gayle had joined the team that year and was a force of nature in the middle overs.
The 2016 season is still one of the most memorable league campaigns for RCB. Virat Kohli scored 973 runs in that season and the record remains the highest number of runs scored by any player in a season of the IPL. The team made it to their third final but lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad by eight runs.
Between 2017 and 2022, the team experienced a lot of changes when it comes to captains and coaches. They missed the playoffs a couple of times and rebuilt their squad at a number of auctions. Faf du Plessis has been brought in as captain ahead of the 2022 season. Under him, RCB reached the playoffs in consecutive seasons in 2022 and 2023, but they lost in the knockout stages both times.
The 2024 season was off to a slow start, with RCB only winning one of their first eight games. But they turned it around in the second half and made the playoffs where they lost to Rajasthan Royals.
The 2025 season was different. The Royal Challengers Bangalore Team looked confident through the league stage. Rajat Patidar was at the forefront. Bhuvneshwar Kumar & Josh Hazlewood took the wickets when required. And when it mattered the most, RCB held their nerve in the final to win the IPL for the very first time. It was a defining moment for the franchise.
Team Performance
Over 18 seasons in the IPL, Royal Challengers Bangalore Stats tells the story of a team that was often a team of competitors but not always a consistent team. So far in eighteen seasons played, they have qualified for the playoffs ten out of eighteen times.
Their championship run of 2025 is their best season. They won 11 of their 16 games in the league and were top two on the league points table. That win percentage of 68.8 was the best they had ever had in one season.
In comparison, 2019 and 2017 were forgettable seasons. The lowest total was reported in the history of IPL in 2017 when they scored only 49 runs against Kolkata Knight Riders.
The team has traditionally been batting-heavy. For most of their history, it has been the bowling that disappointed them at critical moments. That changed in 2025, as the bowling unit was more balanced and disciplined than in the past. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Krunal Pandya took 17 wickets each in IPL 2025 and Josh Hazlewood topped with 22 wickets.
In terms of individual batting Virat Kohli scored 657 runs in the 2025 season at an average of 54.75. He has been the most consistent performer for the side in all 18 seasons.

Home Ground Details
Stadium: M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru
Seating Capacity: Approximately 32,000
Pitch Type: Batting friendly, flat surface with short boundaries of about 55 to 65 metres. The pitch tends to be hard and helps the ball to come on quickly to the bat. Spinners receive a little help in the later overs as the surface gets worn. First innings scores of more than 180 are not uncommon here.
Advantage for RCB: The small boundaries and flat pitch suit RCB’s batting heavy lineup. Chinnaswamy has witnessed some of the biggest scores in the history of IPL. Virat Kohli alone has scored 3040 runs in 86 innings at this ground.
The fans seeking the up-to-date Royal Challengers Bangalore Fixtures and venue updates must keep an eye on the official RCB and IPL channels.
